Delta firefighters battling structure fire

River Road is closed to traffic, cause of fire is unknown at this time

Delta Firefighters are on scene battling a structure fire in the River Road area of Delta.

Around 3 p.m., Delta fire received multiple calls about smoke coming from a building on River Road.

Deputy Chief Brad Wilson told the Optimist that crews arrived on scene in the 8500 block of River Road.

“It is in an industrial complex,” said Wilson. “We moved it up to a first alarm. Currently we have five apparatus on scene, plus a battalion and a fire investigation unit. River Road is closed to traffic until further notice. There are no injuries reported and no occupants in the structure. We are doing a defensive attack and trying to contain it and stop the progress of the fire.”

Wilson said Delta Fire will be on scene for most of the evening.

He said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.

Delta Police are on scene as well assisting with traffic control.

DPD spokesperson Kristy Neville said River Road is closed from Alexander to 82nd.

The City of Delta, on its Twitter feed, advised motorists to stay out of the area and to use Highway 17 as an alternate route.

Curtis Kreklau from South Fraser News Services told the Optimist in an email that the fire appeared to involve items in the yard, a building and a large row of cedar hedges.

He said the fire also burned through nearby BC Hydro power lines cutting off power to a large area.
