Let’s head back to June 1969 when resident Tommy Matheson was one of the most popular people in Ladner.

An employee of the Surrey Co-op, located at the corner of Elliott and Bridge streets, won $1,000 at an annual $20-a-plate dinner held at the Breakers in Point Roberts.

Optimist staff members Joan Hortsand Eileen Taylor admired the fine colours of the seldom-seen $1,000 bill.

The $1,000 note stopped being issued in 2000.

It’s removal from legal tender status means they can no longer be used in cash transactions, but The Bank of Canada will continue to honour them at face value.
