As usual this weekend, the final one of August, the Husband clan will gather in Ladner for the annual family reunion.

The family has a lot to celebrate this year - at a time when many marriages end in divorce, four couples are marking their 50th wedding anniversaries this year.

Pat Rogers (née Husband) and her husband Matt, former Delta mayor Doug Husband and his wife Maureen (née Embree), Jack and Lois Henry, and Gordon and Audrey Henry (Jack and Gordon's mother was a Husband).

All four cousins were married in 1961.

Pat Rogers, who is the oldest of the 31 cousins, actually met her future husband at her cousin's wedding on April 1, 1961. There were two weddings that day. She sang at the first one where she met Matt Rogers. They went to the second wedding together and were married themselves three months later on June 30.

She says the short court-ship was not out of the ordinary back then.

Rogers says times are different today.

When she and Matt wed, she said, people got married and expected to stay married forever.

"You got married and you expected to be married for the rest of your life," she said.

A marriage officiant herself, Rogers says she still sees couples who expect to stay married to the same person for life, however, couples today face more challenges that can put a strain on a marriage.

The Husband family roots run deep in Ladner.

Her grandmother Sarah Jane Husband (née Pybus) was born here in 1890. Rogers' father John Husband, the oldest of nine children, was also born in Ladner in 1910.

The clan comes together on the last Saturday of August every year for a family reunion on the Husband farm on Westham Island.

Now known as Emma Lea Farm, Rogers' cousin Kevin Husband and his wife Joanne run it.
