A migrant worker employed at a local farm was injured Tuesday morning when he slipped into a harvesting machine.

Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer said officers received a distress call at about 10 a.m. Tuesday from a farm in the 4200-block of River Road.

He said a 30-year-old farm worker had slipped on a potato harvesting machine. The man's right leg was drawn into the machine, trapping it up to the hip.

Delta fire and emergency services responded and were able to extricate the man, who was subsequently flown by air ambulance to Royal Columbian Hospital for treatment.

"It is reported that he received no broken bones, but there is a concern that the damaged sustained by the muscles and tissue in this leg may lead to further complications," Eisenzimmer said. "He is being held overnight for observation."

The man, a Mexican citizen, is working in Canada on a government sanctioned farm workers program.

WorkSafe BC was notified of the incident, he said, responded to the call and has taken over the investigation.
