Delta Police are providing the public with information on a new scam that has been reported in the community.
Often called a “grandparent scam” due to the demographic most commonly extorted, an emergency scam will often manipulate your emotions to extort money by claiming to be a family member in crisis requiring immediate cash for legal fees or bail.
Delta has seen a number of emergency scams already this year, and in 2022 alone, more than $322,000 in losses were reported province-wide, a fraction of the $530 million reported across Canada.
It is estimated that only five to 10 per cent of victims report scams and fraud to the Canada Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) or law enforcement.
