Tsawwassen sidewalk tripping hazard to be fixed

12 avenue sidewalk project
Due to tree roots heaving the sidewalk and creating trip hazards for pedestrians, a portion of concrete sidewalk along the boulevard and trees will be replaced.

A sidewalk replacement project in Tsawwassen, that was put on hold, is finally going to proceed.

Delta council last week approved a staff recommendation to award a $405,320 contract for the reconstruction of the existing sidewalk along 12 Avenue at Bayside Plaza.

The project involves removal of the existing sidewalk, memorial plaques and 12 trees.

The new sidewalk will include new memorial plaques, drainage improvements, an irrigation system, tree receptacles and tree grates.

The roots of the 12 existing trees along 12 Avenue have heaved the existing sidewalk and are causing tripping hazards for pedestrians, according to Delta staff, noting those trees will be removed and more appropriate replacement species will be planted.
The project will cost almost $500,000 once all other costs are factored.

As the pedestrian sidewalk and plaza area is on both public and private property, a portion of the project costs are being funded by the adjoining private property owner AL Scott (Bayside) Inc.

The removal and replacement of a portion of concrete sidewalk along the boulevard area of 5550 12 Avenue was to be completed as part of the 2020 Neighbourhood Road Improvement Program.

Council last year was told Bayside could not support the cost-sharing project at the time as its commercial tenants were experiencing the financial impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

A report to council earlier this year noted subsequent discussions with Bayside indicated it was preferable to defer the sidewalk replacement until 2022.

However, Bayside this year came forward with a request to expedite the project.
